Typhidot test is an acute serological test which helps in the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies released by the immune system against Salmonella antigen.
This is the first test for paratyphoid fever caused by S. Paratyphi.
The causing agent for the typhoid enteric fever caused typhi bacteria.
It is mainly spread through contaminated food and water and shows symptoms in the form of fever, loss of appetite, headache and abdominal pain.
Blood culture test and Widal test are standard tests for the diagnosis of typhoid. One week after the symptoms appear, the disease-causing organisms are detected in the blood.
Blood culture test results take 2-3 days to come, which delays the diagnosis of typhoid and paratyphoid.
Identification of the bacteria in the bone marrow sample is the confirmatory test for the correct diagnosis of typhoid. However, the test is difficult to perform as a routine laboratory procedure.
In contrast, the Typhidot test is helpful in detecting antibodies in the first week of illness. This helps in early diagnosis of the condition, which helps the doctors to start early treatment of typhoid and paratyphoid fever. This test is done when a person shows the following symptoms:
- Fever with pain in the body, especially in the legs and head.
- Increased sleepiness and weakness in the body along with fever.
- Feeling bloated with pain in my stomach.
- Relatively slow pulse compared to rising body temperature.
- After one week of fever, red, small boils or pimples emerge on the stomach and back.
Fasting is not necessary for Typhidot test. No special restrictions are required to be followed before the test.
The Typhidot test is performed using the kit. In which the blood sample is placed in a test holder and mixed with reagents or chemicals provided in the kit. Typhidot test result or turn-around time is 1-3 hours. The test results are compared to a control provided in the kit to reach a diagnostic condition.
The Typhidot test is an enzyme immunoassay test that detects IgG and IgM antibodies against a Salmonella bacterial antigen, a 50 kilodalton outer membrane protein.
Typhidot-m test is another form of Typhidot test which helps in the diagnosis of acute phase of typhoid infection.
Normal Result
A negative result for Salmonella IgG and IgM antibodies indicates no infection.
Abnormal Result
A positive result for IgM antibodies indicates an acute infection.
This indicates previous infection or chronic infection.
Since this test gives a positive result for IgG antibodies present in the blood due to a chronic infection, it cannot differentiate between a past infection and a current infection or chronic infection.
Research studies have shown that Typhidot test has low or poor efficacy in detecting both positive and negative cases of typhoid as compared to blood culture test.
The Typhidot m test is better than the Typhidot test, as it detects only IgM antibodies present in the blood during the acute phase of the disease. However, both these tests are more effective in diagnosing typhoid in the early stages than the blood culture test.
Conclusion
According to WHO, the Typhidot test can be used for early detection of typhoid, especially in areas where typhoid is frequently seen. Furthermore, because of the low cost of the test, the Typhidot test can be performed even in laboratories with inadequate staff and equipment.
However, rapid antibody tests (Typhidot test, Typhidot M test, Tubex test, etc.) are not recommended in routine laboratory tests for diagnosing errors in testing due to typhoid.
This is because it can lead to a complete lack of treatment for those who are diagnosed as false negatives, and unnecessary treatment for those who are diagnosed as false negatives with typhoid. is done.
Blood culture, though slow, is an accurate method for diagnosing typhoid and paratyphoid.
